Spiritual Direction
BIO: Angela Malmgren and her husband, Chris are the founders of Jesus House Prayer & Renewal Center. Angie has a B.S. in Education with a minor in Science from West Chester University; and a M.S. in Pastoral Care with certification in Spiritual Direction from Neumann University. She belongs to a peer group of spiritual directors who meet monthly. Angie draws on her experience as a wife, mother of four children, grandmother of ten, and great-grandmother of nine.
PERSPECTIVE: I believe that God is already present in the directee and my role is to walk with this person and listen with both ears and heart and be attentive to the movement of the Spirit within them. So, I’m not directing the person, and my deepest understanding is that the Holy Spirit is the Director in our midst. I’m there as a partner of Spirit, to invite silence, when appropriate, and to ask a question, when appropriate, that would lead to more exploration by the directee.
I resonate with the image that Janet Ruffing, R.S.M. puts forth in her book entitled, Spiritual Direction – Beyond the Beginnings. She likens Spiritual Direction to “panning for gold.” I found that sometimes it takes a long time of reflecting upon one’s life until we find the gold within our stories. I believe that spiritual direction leads us to that reflective process.
I invite the persons I see to reflect upon the following:
What is my daily prayer like?
My life?
My close relationships?
In what concrete experiences have I been moved by love, by joy, by beauty?
Or what experiences have been painful and difficult?
How have I shared my feelings about these with God?
Have I noticed a response?
Can you share what you have sensed from God?
SCHEDULING, COSTS: I schedule appointments on a monthly or bi-monthly basis, usually on a sliding scale from $25 - $75.
